Glutathione is Depleted with Age

Picture
Aging is associated with a depletion of vital glutathione levels. Oxidative damage, particularly to the mitochondria, is now a widely accepted explanation for aging.

We are literally "rusting" on the inside! Intracellular glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants to prevent this oxidative aging process.

Glutathione deficiency has been linked to some of the most debilitating age related diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cancer, arthritis, heart disease and macular degeneration.

Glutathione levels fall, but oxidative stress increases with age

Picture
As we age, our production of glutathione decreases in all our cells. Scientists estimate that our levels are falling by around 15% per decade from the age of twenty. Most people over the age of 40 are severely deficient.

Many older people experience various body aches and pains, and turn to anti-inflammatory medications. This may give temporary relief, but will actually make the problem worse in the long run, as pharmaceutical drugs lower gluathione levels further!

Older people with deficient glutathione levels generally feel unwell and tired. This is because the decline in glutathione protection associated with aging is coupled with the effects of cumulative oxidative damage from a lifetime of exposure to free radicals. By boosting glutathione levels, older people can experience more energy, better sleep and reduce the risk of developing many diseases.

Centenarians found to have high glutathione levels

Picture
There has been intensive medical research to try and unlock the secret of centenarians' longevity.  One research study looked at a group of people aged 100 to 105 years of age. When compared with people aged 60 to 79 years old, it was noted there the centenarian group had much higher levels of glutathione. In fact, the centenarians' glutathione levels were in the same range as the 25 to 35 year olds! Those centenarians who were the most vigorous had the highest glutathione activity.
